Shittu Distances Self From Oyo’s ₦300bn Loan Approval, Assembly Fires Back

The controversy over the Oyo State Government’s request for a ₦300 billion loan took a dramatic turn this week, as Hon. Ibrahim Shittu, member representing Saki West Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC), publicly disowned the approval process. His remarks have since sparked a sharp rebuttal from the leadership of the Oyo State House of Assembly.
Hon. Shittu alleged that the loan was passed at an emergency sitting of the Assembly while members were officially on recess from July 31 to September 16, 2025. According to him, the sitting was not properly communicated, and he had no knowledge of or involvement in the approval. He further described the move as a questionable process that sidelined transparency.
But in a swift response, the Assembly leadership dismissed Shittu’s claims as “misleading” and a cover for poor legislative performance. In a joint statement signed by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. Waheed Akintayo, the House said the emergency sitting was both lawful and properly announced on the Assembly’s general communication platform.
They clarified that the loan request was considered during an emergency plenary on August 19, 2025, in line with legislative practice, and was transparently debated.
Breaking down the loan structure, the Assembly explained that:
₦149 billion was meant to refinance an existing facility with the United Bank for Africa (UBA), while
₦151 billion was sought as new funding for infrastructure and contractor financing.
According to the statement, Shittu’s absence from the sitting was not due to lack of notice but a reflection of his “chronic absenteeism.”
The Assembly also faulted his record on oversight functions, noting his absence during major events.
While the House insists the loan approval process was transparent and legitimate, Hon. Shittu maintains that he was deliberately left out of the proceedings. He also challenged the house to make known to the public his attendance record as he does not play truancy as painted.
"On my plenary attendance records. I want to confirm to you that I have nothing less than 80% plenary attendance. ( Because they know you don’t have that record, they want to use that to deceive you ) Pls ignore the cheap blackmail. It is mere damage control. "
He mentioned.
Observers say the development has deepened political tension in the Oyo State legislature, with questions now being asked about both the scale of the loan and the effectiveness of opposition voices in the Assembly.
