The Oke-Ogun region in Oyo State is on the cusp of a major political push, as its pressure groups, leaders and residents rally behind a bid to produce the next governor in the 2027 election. For decades, the region has felt the sting of marginalisation and inability to produce the governor of Oyo state, despite its significant contributions to the state's economy and culture.
Oke-Ogun comprises ten local government areas: Saki West, Saki East, Iseyin, Atisbo, Kajola, Iwajowa, Itesiwaju, Irepo, Olorunsogo and Oorelope. With a population of over 1.5 million people, according to the 2006 census, Oke-Ogun is a significant contributor to Oyo State's economy, particularly in agriculture. The region is known for its rich farmland, producing crops and fruits such as maize, yam, cassava, soybean, cashew, mango and shea butter. In fact, Oke-Ogun accounts for over 70% of Oyo State's agricultural output, making it a vital component of the state's economy.
Since Oyo State's creation in 1976, the governor's seat has been dominated by politicians from Ibadan region, with only one chance to Ogbomosho region, and another to the late Chief Bola Ige during the old Oyo era. This has led to a perceived imbalance in power distribution, with Oke-Ogun and other regions feeling left out. The Egbe Ajosepo Fun Itesiwaju Gbogbo Wa, a non-partisan pressure group and Oke-Ogun region's leaders argue that it's time for Oke-Ogun to take the lead in the state's political landscape.
Egbe Ajosepo Fun Itesiwaju Gbogbo Wa leaders and followers are calling for power rotation, citing the need for equity and justice in the distribution of political power. They argue that the region's significant contributions to the state's economy and culture warrant a chance to produce the governor. This demand is not only driven by a desire for political power but also by a need for development and resource allocation.
While the Oke-Ogun bid gains momentum, challenges lie ahead. The region must navigate the complex web of Oyo State politics, build alliances, and present a strong candidate to win over voters. The incumbent governor's influence on the succession process could also impact the Oke-Ogun bid. We're optimistic his choice shall be from Oke-Ogun region.
As the Oke-Ogun region pushes for the governor's seat, its leaders are urging the people to unite and work towards a common GOAL (Gomina Oyo Awa Lokan). By presenting a strong, united front, Oke-Ogun can make a compelling case for its bid and potentially change the course of Oyo State politics.
With the 2027 election on the horizon, the region's struggle for the governor's seat is set to intensify. The region's unity and determination should help to secure the coveted position. Oke-Ogun is one of the major regions in Oyo State, and it's only fair that the region gets a chance to produce the governor to ensure equitable representation.
Oke-Ogun region has been perceived as marginalised in terms of infrastructure, economic development, and political representation, and having a governor from the region could help address these issues. Rotating power among different regions in Oyo State could promote unity, stability, and equitable development, and Oke-Ogun's turn is long overdue!.
