Former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan, has declared his strong support for the rotation of political power within the state, describing it as a necessary step toward fairness, inclusion, and balanced development. He made this known during an exclusive interview with Okeogun Multimedia TV.
Speaking on the issue of power concentration in the state capital, Ibadan, Olaniyan emphasized that many residents of Ibadan themselves are not opposed to rotating power to other regions such as Okeogun, Ibarapa, Oyo and Ogbomoso.
"Power rotation is something that should be on the mind of every serious-minded person who believes in fairness," he stated. He explained that various groups in Ibadan support power rotation for different reasons.
According to him, some believe the dividends of democracy will reach them better when a non-Ibadan indigene governs. Others argue that governance pressure on Ibadan would reduce, and that the overall development of other zones will bring balance to the state.
"Some Ibadan people understand that power does not belong to them alone," he said. "They also believe that if other zones develop, Ibadan itself will benefit."
As at the time of this interview, engineer Olaniyan expressed confidence that should he contest in a future election, the people of Ibadan would vote for him based on his existing cordial relationship with them. He also stated that the current governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, would support his candidacy and ask the people to vote for him.
The interview has reignited discussions around zoning and equitable governance, especially as the build-up to the 2027 general elections begins to take shape.
Editor’s Note: Although he hadn’t declared at the time of this interview, Engineer Olaniyan has now officially announced his intention to run in the 2027 elections.
